THE RUGBY LEAGUE SONG

“It’s my tribute to the game that I played as a fullback and winger for over 10 years, with Burleigh Bears and Nerang Roosters, on the Gold Coast through the 70’s and 80’s. I like sport but I LOVE rugby league!

In 1980, I witnessed the inaugural State Of Origin match at Lang Park, Brisbane, captained by two of the game’s legends, Arthur Beetson and Tommy Raudonikis, who have become good friends over the years, and I was inspired to write the lines:

“Whether you’re on the Cricket Ground, Lang Park or the bush,
You’ve still gotta run, you’ve still gotta tackle,
And the scrums have got the same ‘push’.
You give it some and you give some more
And you really give your all,
Playing rugby league football, it’s the greatest game of all.”

The call in the middle of the song is by my friend, John McCoy who can be heard on 1008AM (Radio 4TAB Queensland) each week day morning, and he, in my opinion, did one of the all-time great calls of Chris “Choppy” Close scoring a try in that epic encounter.

Now the scrums don’t push like they used to, but the spirit of the game lives on in the song, and people still sing it with the same gusto they always have.

I got to play with and against some of the game’s legends and real characters who have been and still are good mates and it’s through rugby league I witnessed and experienced a culture of good fellowship, sportsmanship and deep friendship, such is the power and reach of the game. I urge anybody out there to join the “Men Of League” organization (www.menofleague.com) as it does fabulous things for those of us who played the game and gave us so much, so that we now, can give back to ‘the greatest game of all’.

Also available is the 2010 version upgraded to include more modern aspects of the game, hence:

“Whether you play at Telstra, Suncorp or the bush”.

It has a unique call by Ray Hadley, of 2GB and The Continuous Call Team fame, who has been an invaluable help to me over the years and continues to support my efforts. Thank you, Ray.

There is also a song I wrote called “Queenslander” expressing my feelings about the Queensland Rugby League team when they do battle each year for the coveted State Of origin series. Yep, I’m a cane toad and I’m challenging anyone out there to do a NSW Blues song. Bring it on! Fellow Queenslanders, do your bit and download your copy now.
